                  The Early Twentieth Century
      was the state’s sixth largest city. The business directory of the
      Georgia Southern and Florida Railway for 1901 noted that the city
      had “paved streets, electric lights, waterworks, telephones, and a
      volunteer fire department. ...” A glance at some of the listings
      from this business directory offers a picture of the community in
      this time period:
