1861 - 1865
With the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, in 1861, Lake
City was without organized military units. The call for volunteers was given and
Lake City and Columbia County responded by organizing six companies, and joined
with Suwannee and LaFayettee Counties for two more for the Confederate Armies.
In addition, other small groups from the area joined as the war progressed.
Columbia County also provided some outstanding Field-officers, such as Lt. Col.
A. J. T. Wright, Lt. Col. M. Whit Smith and R. B. Thomas, Adjutant 2nd. Florida
Infantry.
Columbia County sent the following units into the Confederate Armies:
Columbia Trapiers - Capt. J. R. Francis
Company C, 2nd Florida Regiment - Columbia Rifles - Capt. Walter R.
Moore
Company I, 3rd Florida Infantry - Dixie Stars - Capt. Jesse B. Wood
