History of Military Units in Columbia County, FL (1970) Robert Gary Shields
Our unit was called to Federal service for one year on Nov. 25, 1940,
and was moved to Camp Blanding Dec. 18. We were located in the northwest
area of the camp and were in training ther during the time the camp was
constructed.
On our first week-end of liberty from the camp, one of the members
of the company (Arthur Norsworthy)', was killed on the route home, and I
think he was our only state side casualty. Hugh A. Wilson, Jr. and Foster
Milton were mobolized with the unit as 2nd. Lts. Maxwell Moore was our
1st Sgt Our company strength was about 80 men When we arrived at
Camp Blanding, Capt. Wright was replaced by Capt R. B. Harkness and soon

Capt. Harkness was assigned to the 2nd Bn. staff Lt. Johnson, from A^a
was C.O. during most of our maneuvers in La. Lt. Wilson then took C.O.
When the La. maneuvers were almost over Congress decided that there would
be an indefinite lengthing of what was to have been one year.
I was released to the Enlisted Reserve Corps, on Nov. 25, 1941, and
Pearl Harbor was bombed Dec. 7, 1941. Communications were almost daily
