Chapter Ten: 1900 - 1909
Among the sports played at FAC in the early 1900s was
football. The school had a football team in the 1901-1902 season. In
fact, what some consider the first “unofficial” football game of the
University of Florida (UF) occurred on November 22, 1901, when it
played and lost to Stetson University on a field in Jacksonville.
Florida Agricultural College’s 1902 football team
In 1903 officials changed the name of the Florida Agricultural
College to the University of Florida, de-emphasized military dress
and rules, and put an end to co-education at the student and faculty
levels. Why they did this is not totally clear, especially the part about
female students, since nationwide co-education was becoming the
norm. It would not be until 1947 that the University of Florida, then
located in Gainesville, would admit female students during the regular
academic year.
