A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
MY VERY FIRST CHILD
Today, as 1 set down these thoughts for this book, happens to be July 6, 2012. It just happens to be 57
years ago that my first wile, Ruth, and I had a baby.
Prior to the birth of the child, we had already selected a name which would fit in either case, whether it
was a girl or a boy. The name we selected was Robin.
The baby was born over two months premature, and turned out to be a girl. She lived only about 2 hours
after she was born, and we were both saddened at the great loss we had suffered. I think we had both
looked forward to having this child, but it was not meant to be.
If Robin had lived, today would be her 57 birthday, which puts her to be about 12 years older than my
th
first child that was born to Julie and me, my daughter Suzanne.
We had a rather low key funeral service for the baby, and she is buried in Hopeful Cemetery about 10
feet west of where my mother is buried, or near the head of my mother’s grave. We put in a small
granite tombstone, which reads: Robin Dicks. Infant Daughter of Lenvil and Ruth Dicks. Bom and Died
July 6, 1955.
That little headstone is still in excellent condition, and I went and checked it out today to be sure.
