GROUPS WITH WHOM I HAVE PLAYED THE
TRUMPET

In the course of writing this book, and trying to set my memories and recollections down on paper, it has
occurred to me to do something which I have never done before. That is, to name the various groups in
which I have played the trumpet.

These groups are, in the order in which 1 played in them, as follows: Columbia High School Band, Fifth
Army Division Band, Stetson University Band, Eddie Baumel Swing Band, Stetson University
Symphony Orchestra, Baylor University Symphonic Band, Baylor University Symphony Orchestra,
Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (Charter Member), University of Florida
Summer Band, (for several seasons, under Frank Wicks,) Gainesville Community Band, for several
years, and the Lake City Community College Band, for many years.

Playing with those groups was an experience which was immensely enjoyable, to the extent that the
average person could never envision unless they also played an instrument, and it makes me wonder
how many musicians have enjoyed the experiences which I have enjoyed, after having followed a mule
behind a plow for much of my early youth.

It is a far cry from plowing a mule to playing first trumpet in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

I thank the good Lord above for allowing me to enjoy these experiences, and as I said, the average
person who is not involved in music could not possibly have any understanding of the tremendous
satisfaction one gets from doing what I have done.
