A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
A LITTLE HUMOR
Mr. Spencer lived in a small South Georgia town, so small that a circus had never come to town. Finally,
a circus finally came to town, but being a plain uninterested man he did not attend.
The town was so small that most folks had their own little vegetable garden, and it seems that Mr.
Spencer had a fine garden growing.
The night of the circus, one of the elephants got loose and started wandering about the town.
Mr. Spencer, being an early riser, looked out his window, and beheld the elephant out by his garden
fence. He rushed to the telephone and got the Sheriff on the line and shouted into the telephone, “Hey
Sheriff! There’s some big old grey monster out here by my house and he’s reaching over my garden
fence and pulling up my carrots and turnips with his tail!”
The Sheriff just figured Mr. Spencer was on one of his drunk sprees again, and decided to just try to
humor him.
The Sheriff said, “Mr. Spencer, after he pulls up your vegetables with his tail what is he doing with
them?”
“Well, Sheriff! That's the worst part. If I told you, you wouldn’t believe it!”
