course Fay was flabbergasted and we all got a big laugh out of it. Ma had already plugged in the
refrigerator in the kitchen, and that night we had our own home-made ice in our ice tea. 1 believe that
was the most pleased that I ever saw my mother. That refrigerator had been sitting in the kitchen for a
year already.
Prior to all this, while we were waiting for the power company to turn the power on, she had hired
Emerald’s fiance, Otis Stewart, whom she later married, to run electric wires from the kitchen out to her
hen houses, because she had firmly made up her mind that if she would get lights on in her hen houses,
the chickens would not roost so long, and would eat more feed, and therefore lay more eggs. As it turned
out she was absolutely correct, since shortly thereafter her egg production went up considerably.
