Memories of Golde Dicks Markham (1996) Golde Markham Dicks 69/125
Guy married Agnes Shelly. Both were quite a bit older than I was. Agnes was always
so nice to me and made me feel’like I was a mature person. I really loved her. They, too, are
both gone. I always did like to>be around older people.
My mother never allowed us to ask for food when we visited friends. Lenvil easily got
around Ma, though. On neighborly visits, he said he smelled pineapple, cake, pie, or some
other delicious aroma, and the lady of the house would get the hint. When we’d go to Mrs.
Nettie Pearce’s home, we didn’t have to ask.
Soon after we’d arrive, Mrs. Nettie would say, “Don’t you children want a piece of
cake or pie or cookies?”
She always had something good cooked, and she knew our mother didn’t allow us to
ask, so she made it easy for us.
In 1903, the Florida Agricultural College in Lake City was renamed the “University of
Florida.” The VA Hospital is now in the buildings that were once the University of Florida.
Two years later the university moved to Gainesville.
Pa was close friends with Dr. Tribble. I’m not sure, but I think Dr. Tribble was presi
dent of the college in Lake City. Dr. Tribble lived on campus and had our family over for
dinner many times. Tribble Street in Lake City was named' in honor of Dr. Tribble; my
brother was named for this doctor and good friend. Dr. Tribble liked to visit us in the coun
try. He enjoyed our country vittles as much as we liked city food.
Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Ray were another couple we visited frequently. They lived on East
Duval Street in Lake City. Their great-great-grandsons are Josh and Aaron Roberts. Mr. Ray
was secretary of the Beulah Baptist Association for years and an employee of Paul’s East
Coast Lumber Company.
I’m sure that Pa benefited from these friendships and from many others who helped
make our family stronger and happier. Just to mention a few of the people: Lem Markham,
Walter Markham, Norman Robinson, Joe Lee Woods, M.L. Plimpton. Some of these men
made our Christmas holidays happier by sending Pa donations which made it possible for
Santa to visit us. They also trusted Pa with credit.
