Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

become a circuit judge and sentenced several others to Raiford Prison. J. Y. Wilson never served

any prison time either. He merely became President of Wilson National Life Insurance Company,
served on the Board of Trustees for four universities, and set an example of good citizenship for

               others to follow.
Then the lovely and articulate Rabun Calhoun Chappell will probably stroll to the podium

and confidently recite her traditional narration of the dangerously tongue-twisting tale of the Pott
family of pit vipers who were so poor they didn’t have a pit to hiss in. You get the idea. Her

               classmates will thunder their appreciation.
Saturday evening, former CHS teacher, the beloved Sam Eff will probably stand and once

again thank Lake City for hiring him when nobody else would, because he was a Jew. He will tell
of his sweet memories at CHS, then close like this, “I love you all now as adults and I loved all of
you back when you were students.” Pause. Then a small joke: “Of course, I loved some of you

more than I loved others!” More laughter.

Genevieve Nelson will shine and sparkle and add a ton of fun the way she always does.
She’ll probably say something like: “Why don’t y’all just tell people the CHS class of 1934 is having
                                                           th
a reunion? Why do you have to say it’s our 60 ? That makes us sound old! Let the people do their
              own arithmetic!”
                     Everybody will clap their agreement.

The evening will move on and the quiet conversations will be of bygone school days in the
brown wooden building, the white brick building, and the red brick building. There will be stories
of favorite teachers like Dena Snodgrass, Mary Groover, Tom Pittard, Annie Sikes, Alva Payne,

Bernice Milton, Dorothy Finlayson, and Mrs. Selwyn Chalker. There will be memories of their kind
principal, Jerome “Pop” Eastham. There will be lots of stories about the rock-hard discipline and

tough love of Coach Hobe Hooser.
The CHS Class of 1934 will surely fill the starry hours of that happy night with memories,
              laughter, and youthful delight.

Verily, verily, I say unto you - there’s going to be rollicking fun and good times at the
Holiday Inn Saturday! The CHS Class of 1934 will see to that!
