Yearbook (yir'book) n. A book published annually, presenting information about the
previous year.
As we look at the definition given in the Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary, it some-
how appears incomplete. Why, it doesn't even mention the names Colvin Carter and
Diane Harrison! Without these two people, you wouldn't be reading this page right now.
Where are the following words: hard work, frustration , layout sheets, picas, deadlines,
ads, money, sleepless nights, short tempers, copy blocks, trapped white space, and
imaginations? Surely the definition wouldn 't be complete without these words! Yes,
if we could write a dictionary, we would lengthen quite a few definitions. Here are
some examples.
Teacher (tech'er) n. Person who teaches, understands, and aids greatly in the making
of a yearbook by letting students out of class, is patient with them when they are late
to class, and doesn't turn their names in when they can 't make it to class, The
Columbia High Faculty.
Principal (prin'se pi) n. The head of a school , an angel in disquise, one who knowingly
permits the yearbook staff to roam the halls of the school and the streets of the city
during school time to find an essential picture, to sell an ad, etc., Mr. David Ellis.
Photographer (fe tog 're fer) n. Person who takes photographs, one who drives to Lake
City from Gainesville on very short notice to save peoples lives, one who walks through
jungles, swims through rapids to take one picture that is desperately wanted, Mr.
Stan Wilkinson.
Grateful (grat'fel) adj. Feeling gratitude, thankful, this is how we feel towards
Mrs. Jan Norris, who wrote thousands of early dismissals for us to go here and there.
We are also very grateful to the many businesses who contributed much of their time and
effort in the making of this yearbook.
Friend (friend) n. Person who favors and supports, one who leaves his quiet office in
Gainsville to come to mass confusion in room 38, one who stresses the importance of
meeting deadlines, one who is understanding and one who listens to America, America sung
in rounds; Mr. Jerry Fields, Paul Roy Studios, and Wayne Peterson.
Staff (staf) Group assisting a chief, those who took all of the ups and downs and believe
us, we had them .. We would like to express a special thanks to those on the Columbian
Staff.
Thank you ,
