The  Statue of Liberty  celebrated  her  98th  birthday in  1984  and  he  began  to  how  her  age. The  tatue  was  worn
                 from  constant pummeling by wind,  alt air and  acid  rain, and  the iron  nbbing  upporting  the copper covering  was  badly
                 corroded.  A  two-year  re  toration  began  in  July  19  4.  It  included  a  new  gold-plated  torch.

                     The  United  States  did  very  well  in  the Summer Olympic  ,  winning  83  gold  medal  ,  61  ilver  and  30  bronze. Carl
                 Lew1s  won  four  gold  medal  -  the  100  meters,  the  200  meter  ,  the  four  100  meter  relay  and  the  long  jump.  Mary
                 Lou  Retton  won  the  all-round  gold  medal  and  Jed  the  gymna  tic  team  to  a  ilver  medal;  he  al  o  won  bronze  medals
                 for  the  floor  exerci  e  and  the  uneven  parallel  bar  and  took  a  ilver  medal  for  the  vault.  The  ov1et  Union  and  other
                 Communist  countries  boycotted  the  Summer  Olympic  .

                     The  Winter  Olympic  in  Yugo lavia  aw  the  United  State  win  four  gold  and  four  1lver  medal   cott  Hamilton
                 won  a  gold  in  the  men's  figure  kating  and  Steve  Mahre  won  the  gold  medal  in  the  G1ant  lalom  kung  event.
