Making the Goal!

Lake Mary- Columbia High's soccer team entered the (fnal eigltt following a 1-o win over host Lake Mary High In the
region semifinal round. The team were deadlocked until the 72nd minute when Columbia goalkeeper, Thomas Olmsted,
lcicJwt the ball out to Travis Tyler. Tyler carried the ball for 20 yaras until the defenders converged on him, then slid It Off
on an angle to Kyle Lussier. Lussier had one touCh before blasting the ball into the corner Of the net. "'Both teams were up
and down the fletd, .. Columbia coa h TOdd Widergren said. "It was just like we talked abOut and worked on. Everybody just
played great ...
Widergren was especially pleased with the play of Olm ted, who was locked In a struggle with Lake Mary's
excellent striker and matChed against a top keeper.
e've got the best goalkeeper in the state,· Widergren said. "'He made two saves that were sure goal . The
defense played great but Thomas made 12 saves and that Is a lot for a playoff game."'
On February 16, 2001 the soccer team went to Orange Park (or the regional flnals. Unfortunately, the team lost
1-D. The Tiger soccer team was very disappointed, but they tcnow there will always be next year. They made a mark on
Columbia High's history. This was the last game for many of the team members. The seniors are Justin Hunt, )ames
Frasier. Geoff Graham, Chase Moses, Matt hort, Thomas Langley, Thomas OQv d, Travis Tyler. Marie Scott, Brett Frazer, and
Kyle Lussier. Chase Goodfellow was the manager. As the flnal quote of the 2000-2001 soccer season, Coach Todd
Windergren said, '7he boys did a great job and played their hearts out. I would not ask anymore from a group of
athletes."
