Yery ropular Liternry Society came into existence in the year 1 11'1-l·
The succe~s with which the two other s cieties were carried on, and the promincnrc that th< ir
members were acquiring as able speakers, both at home and abroad , het·ame the spark that stt aflame
the ambitious aspirations of our own girl students : therefore, at the opening tenn of that year the
Clutonian Society held its first meeting, in which 1\liss Daisy Rogers. at that time a Junior, was elcclt·d
its first president. The society was named in honor of Dr. Clute, who was the President of the Col-
lege at that time.
At these interesting Friday afternoon assemblages, which were oftentimes semi public, the usual programme
was rendered. consisting of debates, recitations, \"OCal and instrumental music, electing commillet:s for enll:rtain-
menl~, etc.-bthiness transactions customary in societies of this kind.
The Forum and Bema Societies gracefully recognized the new society by tendering to its members aiJ(l
