Early Set Hern ent
Frederick P. Cone, would serve eight years in the Florida Senate
during the early part of the twentieth century and be elected
Governor in 1936. Daniel Newnan Cone was only twenty-one years
old when he came to Columbia County with William in 1835. He
was killed while performing his duties as an officer of the law six
years later. His son, Daniel Newnan, Jr., was later to become the
postmaster of Benton.14
The Goodbreads, Browns and Summeralls were other families
in the county’s northern part. Some thirteen of the early families
moved into the Corinth area. John Starling Goodbread was a
soldier during the War of 1812 before being discharged at Camden
County, Georgia. John and his brother, Jacob T. Goodbread, came
to Florida in 1841. The Brown brothers, William and Epaminon-
dus settled in the northern part of the county at Blounts Ferry. The
Tolberts, Niblacks, Witts, and Getzens are among the early fam
ilies who settled in the county’s southern part.15
William Niblack came to Columbia County between 1824 and
1827, settling first in Alligator and later to the south. Niblack had
lived in Indiana and Kentucky but had settled in Camden County,
Georgia, prior to moving to Florida.16 The Collins family, a very
large family in Columbia County, also started first in Alligator
and then established themselves in the Tustenugee Community.
Charles H. B. Collins and his wife Ann moved to Florida from
South Carolina sometime in the early 1830’s. Many of the pioneer
family names were found on headstones of “old Bethel Cemetery”
located on the southeast corner of Alligator Lake some three miles
out of Lake City. The family names of Crews, Prevatt, and
Goodbread were seen on the headstones of this cemetery before it
