History of Military Units in Columbia County, FL (1970) Robert Gary Shields
Hq. 2nd. Battalion, 1st Florida infantry Regiment, which had been
organized in Live Oak in 1899, was transfered to Lake City on June 28, 1903.
This unit was under the command of Major A. B. Small. It served in Lake
City until it was returned to Live' Oak in 1910.
Major Alfred Boyd Small
Alfred Boyd Small enlisted in Company D, Fifth (Separate) Battalion,
Florida State Troops, in 1896, and was commissioned First Lieutenant
and assigned to the same organization December 11, 1896; was commissioned
Captain August 19, 1897, and re-commissioned Captain August 24, 1900. He
was appointed Major June 23, 1903, and assigned to command the Second
Battalion, First Infantry, Florida State Troops; reappointed June 23, 1907.
Service continuous since 1896.
