At Camp Wheeler, Company C became part of the 31st. (Dixie) Division.
Then all officers and enlisted men of the old \lst. Infantry Regiment were
transferred and used in the organization of new units of machine gun, field

artillery and infantry battalions. The 2nd. Infantry Regiment was redesignatec
the 124th Infantry in Sept. The units went to France with the American
Expeditionary Force under Gen. Pershing, but did not see action as a
division. The men were used to fill up regiments depleted by casualties.
In late 1918 and early 1919 the American Forces were returned to the
United States and disbanded.
