History of Military Units in Columbia County, FL (1970) Robert Gary Shields






                            In the Fall of 1947, Capt. Wilson was promoted to the S-2 staff

                      position of the regiment and H. G. Cochran was promoted to Captain and
                      assumed command of the unit.
                            The unit's armory was,once again, the present City Hall. The facilitie:

                      were very adequate, and made the problems of organizing a new local company
                      much easier. Quite a bit of equipment was received in 1947 but the first

                      tanks were not received until the spring of 1948.              On Nov. 1, 1948,
                      the unit was redesignated as 'Tank Company, 124th Infantry.’ with total

                      authorized strength of 5 officers and 93 enlisted men.
                           On November 18, 1950, while under the command of Capt. Cochran,
                      the unit was called to State Active Duty for traffic control duty at

                     Gainesville, Florida. There were 3 officers, 1 warrant officer and 52
                      enlisted men present for this duty.
                           Capt. Cochran, who had assumed command on July 30, 1947 was transferred

                      to Hq. & Hq. Company, 124th Infantry on March 21, 1952. He was replaced
                     by 2nd Lieutenant          er 1st Lt. and Capt.) Floyd L. Kennon, Jr., who

                      commanded the unit until Feb. 25, I960. Other Commanding Officers during
                      this period include: 1st. Lt. Carl L. Allison; Capt. George M. Coates,Jr.;
                      Capt. Thomas M. Betts; and Capt. Walter H. Skinner,III. On Sept. 14, 1964,

                      the unit was once again called to State Active Duty for flood control
                      at Live Oak, Florida. The unit was released from State Active Duty on
                      Oct. 6, 1964. Capt. Randolph A. Greene was named C.O. Jan. 27, 1966.

                     The unit was on State Active Duty for riot control in Gainesville, Florida
                      from April 8, 1968 to April 9, 1968. On Oct. 1, 1969, Capt. Ralph G. Greene
