Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams

In proceedings instituted by the family, a mandamus case filed under
Judge Hal W. Adams. Adams, a circuit judge, had to, in turn, file with
the Florida Supreme Court regarding his potential jurisdiction in the

              case.

The slow wheels of justice were grinding when a new year and new

semester dawned and many of the Columbia football players took up the

              cause of basketball and track.

Column writers like Sam Butz and Walter Lynch in Jacksonville, Ocala,
and Palatka papers deemed Columbia’s penalty too harsh to the players

              and community.

Lake City had, however, one last stick to poke in the eye of the FHS AA.

Mulberry High had its season suspended one day before Columbia,
because one of its players had been compensated for playing baseball.

Since neither team could play members of the high school association.
CHS proposed a game to decide the championship of the “Outlaw

League.” Mulberry accepted and the game was played on Nov. 25.

Mulberry had held the Ridge Championship in South Florida for five

years and had beaten a Lake Wales team coached by Lake City’s Doc
Melton, but the Tigers prevailed 13-0. Douglas Littlefield had an 11-

yard touchdown run and Ham Mathis scored on a five-yard run, set up
by his 30-yard reception on a pass from Myers Parrish.

Record keeping in the 1930s was not what it is today and a few former
students have admitted over the years that they attended school at

advanced ages. With jobs hard to find in those tough times, sometimes
school was the best place for a young person to stay out of trouble.

As for John M., it is definite he stayed with relatives in Lake City during
the football season, which is more than the residency requirements

               needed nowadays.
