Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams

*A “Town Follies of 1941” dance recital program. Held at the old Desoto Theater,
the young students of the “Peggy Jean Horton School of Dance” happily danced
their way though a full program of entertainment. Twelve-year-old Peggy Jean
was billed as the youngest dance instructor in the country.

Some of the dancers were Betty, Clara, and Marea Wilson; Merita and Patsy
Strozer; Cleo and Eufala Leigh; Carolyn Wilson; and Clorece Markham.

*Two mid-1940’s movie handbills showing the upcoming ‘picture shows’ at the
downtown Desoto and Grand theaters. That week’s movies starred such
Hollywood legends as Ann Sheridan, Spencer Tracy, Kay Francis, Fred
MacMurray, Jimmy Stewart, and future U.S. President, Ronald Reagan.

                  TWO CROSSES

Two roadside crosses at the intersection of SR 252 and SR 245 (Price Creek
Road) mark the hallowed ground where two of our finest young people died in a
                  car crash.

The two crosses bear the names “Cassandra Mae Sund” and “Ricky Goodman
IV”. A small sign propped up against the two crosses reads, “We love you
                  Cassie and Lil Rickie.”

Sadly, there are an increasing number of these roadside crosses around our
county. Let’s let them serve as a reminder to all of us to try to take better care of
each other on our ever more congested roadways.

                  DECLARING OUR INDEPENDENCE

For many years, some older official government documents always included a
reference to the number of yearn that had passed since our country declared its
independence. For example, when Edgar G Persons was elected county school
superintendent in 1894, these words followed the date on his official paperwork:
“and of the Independence Of the United States the 119th year.”

                  THE MOOD RING

A wife explained her ‘mood ring’ like this: “My husband gave me this mood ring
the other day. When I’m in a good mood, it turns green. When I’m in a bad
mood, it leaves a red mark on his forehead.”
