Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams

     JANUARY 4, 2004

   FAREWELL, RICK RAWLEIGH

Sherwood Arden "Rick" Rawleigh, 77, died December 31, 2003. He had taught
physical education mainly at Lake City Junior High School for more than 32
   years.

Rich was an extraordinary P.E. teacher.

Prior to his arrival, P.E. consisted mainly of informal games of tag football,
   softball, and basketball.

To those, Rick added wrestling, track, a host of other sports, and health
   education.

He started a formal intramural program involving students school-wide where
homerooms competed in a variety of sports, sometimes after school with the whole
   school watching.

He created the first LCJHS Falcon football and basketball teams and coached them
a long time without any supplementary pay.

He coached swimming in the summer and took many students to AAU and Junior
Olympic competition in a variety of sports.

He introduced organized football to the youngsters who later won CHS's only
state championship, and he promoted girls' participation in sports long before
it became the accepted thing to do.

Young fellows like Mike Lee, Glenn Hunter, Steve Chamberlin, David Shackelford,
Donnie Williams, and many others learned organized sports under Coach Rawleigh.

Rest in Peace, Rick Rawleigh. You served our school system and our community
well, and you left everything a lot better than the way you found it.
