John Worth’s study entitled The Timucuan Chiefdoms of
Spanish Florida (see Further Reading at the end of the book) de-
scribed an early Spanish mission, Santa Cruz de Tarihica, which was
eight miles northwest of present-day Lake City. That location would

be appropriate for agriculture and fishing.
One logo used by the city shows the Native American past
of the city – in the lower righthand corner.
An Olustee Park monument to
Chief Alligator – Lake City was
originally named Alligator
in his honor.
