Introduction

Morris Williams of Lake City and Kevin McCarthy of
Gainesville completed this illustrated history of Lake City in the year
of its sesquicentennial, which began on January15, 2009, and com-
memorated the 150th anniversary of the change of the name of the
community from Alligator to Lake City.
They spent much time collecting material, interviewing impor-
tant individuals in the history of the city, examining material in various
archives, and annotating photographs for use in the book. Because
they know that the history of a place is much more than the compila-
tion of names and dates, they have examined diaries, historical ac-
counts, and eyewitness descriptions of the history of this fascinating
place. They were particularly indebted to the excellent 1981 history
of the county, Edward Keuchel’s A History of Columbia County,
Florida.
They sincerely hope that many readers will find this history of
value: long-time residents, newly arrived residents and visitors, teach-
ers, students, geneologists, and those interested in the history of an
important city in the story of Florida.
