A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
AT FIRST SIGHT
On another vacation, Beadie and I flew to Vancouver British Columbia, and boarded a cruise ship which
took the inland water way up to Alaska. We saw much of Alaska from waterways inside that
magnificent State, and we left the cruise ship on one occasion and took a day off and Hew up to Point
Barrow, which is on the Arctic Ocean, and is extremely cold even during the month of July. It was a one
day trip up there by plane, and we took a bus tour of the area around Barrow, which is a small Eskimo
town of perhaps 500 people.
Incidentally, that is the place where Will Rogers died in a plane crash, and they have erected a
monument to him on that site. Those of my readers who have never experienced seeing a movie starring
Will Rogers have certainly missed a lot, because he was an unbelievable character.
One memorable thing that happened on that trip was that on the flight back from Point Barrow to
Fairbanks, there was a young Eskimo boy of about 12 to 14 years old who had been bom in the small
village of Barrow, and had never been anywhere else. When we landed at Fairbanks and he saw trees
and bushes, and grass, the look on his face was something 1 will never forget. It had never occurred to
me that a child bom in Point Barrow would have never seen a tree or bush or grass and it was a sight for
him to behold, and it was a sight for us to behold, seeing his reaction.
