A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
Another humorous thing that comes to mind, is an incident that happened at the State Road 6
Interchange with 1-75 at Jasper, after we had built the motel there which was franchised under the Travel
Lodge franchise.
We built a nice restaurant on the other side of Highway 6, which we called the Coach and Horses, and
one night Kermit and I were eating in there, and Kermit ordered a hamburger and told the waitress “hold
the onion”.
After a while they served Kermit his hamburger, and it had the biggest pile of onions on it that I have
ever seen in my life on one sandwich. Kermit told the waitress, “didn’t I say hold the onion?” “I thought
you said you wanted a whole onion”. That tickled us, and for some reason I have never forgotten it, and
1 don’t think Kermit has either.
At the end of the school term in 1966,1 was spending so much time trading in real estate, that I resigned
as Columbia High School Band Director, and went to work in the Real Estate Business with Kermit and
R.A. full time.
I went ahead and went to school to finish the educational requirements to apply for my Broker’s
License, and in addition to the educational requirements, before you could become a Real Estate Broker,
you had to have served at least one year under a Licensed Broker, as a Real Estate Salesman. Of course I
spent that one year of Internship under Kermit’s Agency, and then I applied for a Broker’s License.
Upon receiving it, 1 opened my own Real Estate Agency, around the end of 1968, or the beginning of
1969, and have been a Real Estate Broker ever since. However, I am no longer active in the business, as
1 have turned Dicks Realty over to Brad and Andy.
