A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks

to the bank and actually change it in to money.” But that kind of demonstrates what kind of fellow Will
Gainey was, because he had agreed to burn S5.00 and he was prepared to do it, although in those days
S5.00 was an awful lot of money. You could buy a hamburger with all the trimmings for 5 cents, and
buy a 16 ounce drink for 5 cents, and haircuts cost a quarter. So Will’s willingness to bum a S5.00 bill
said a lot about his integrity and willingness to do what he had promised.

Without elaborating on it, it goes without saying that we were all very very fond of Will Gainey, and I
have often wondered whatever happened to him. He would be well over 100 years old if he were alive
today, and I am reasonably sure that he has not survived to this day.
