A Columbia County Boy's Recollections and Memories of Columbia County Florida (2012) Lenvil H. Dicks
them and seeing them lying in their casket, as was the custom in those days to be kept at home. Funeral
Homes didn’t come into vogue until a few years later, or if funeral homes existed at that time, most of
the people were too poor to do anything but buy a casket, and let the deceased repose in the same house
he had lived in until he was taken to the cemetery for burial. They both are buried at Hopeful Cemetery,
as are both of my grandmothers, as well as my great grandfather and great grandmother. In fact, my
great grandmother was the first person ever to be buried at Hopeful Cemetery.
I regret to this day that 1 could not have spent more time with Grandpa Dicks, and I regret that I did not
have an opportunity to be old enough to understand my grandpa Tyre a little better than I did at a young
age. I don’t think he was really a bad man but he was one of these people who simply was born without
much sense of humor. My observation to this day, nearly 80 years later after both of them died, to
realize that not many people are very fond of a person who has absolutely no sense of humor.
