Memories of Golde Dicks Markham (1996) Golde Markham Dicks
foreword,
I have attempted to write down memories of my life for my grandchildren, great
grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews who have acted interested in the early
1900s—the era in which I grew up. Their interest is what gave me.ithe courage to attempt
this memoir. I’m not sure if I am capable of such an undertaking.
My son-in-law, Dan Booz, is the one who inspired me to keep writing when I was
tired or discouraged. He helped to type and print out copies for me to inspect. He encour
aged me by saying what a good job I’m doing. I could not have done this without his help
and inspiration.
Sharon, my only child, also deserves much credit. She typed, corrected spelling, and
probably corrected some grammar. To Sharon and Dan, I offer my heartfelt thanks!
In recalling incidents in my life, I have tried my best to recollect them exactly. It may
seem that we had a hard life in the early part of the 20th century, but I feel that I had a good
and a happy life. Actually, our family had a much better life than most other families en
joyed. This was largely due to the fact that Ma and Pa were smart people, good planners,
and very talented. They persevered and set goals for themselves and their children—they
never gave up. I wish I could convey to my family just how wonderful my parents were.
Perhaps these memories will give some indication of how amazing John and Pearl Dicks
were. I’ve done the best I could with the ability I have, so please stretch your imagination all
you can and read between the lines.
