Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

Department of Physical Education. From that time on Katherine Montgomery built the FSCW
program into one of the best anywhere. She got a new gymnasium built, recruited a strong faculty,

developed a first-rate curriculum that would lead to a master’s degree, offering 63 courses, and
developed physical education programs for public schools. She earned a doctorate degree from

Columbia University and became known as the “Dean of Physical Education in the South.”
Dr. Kate was recognized nationally and internationally for her pioneering work. She was

selected for Who’s Who in Women, Who’s Who in American Education and Pioneer Women of
Florida. The women’s physical education building at FSU is named in her honor. Ironically, she

died the day she retired, after 44 years of service to FSCW/FSU Dr. Kate was the sister of Lake
City’s own “Dr. Mont” and aunt to Ed, James and David Montgomery

It seems obvious that Dr. Kate deserves to belong in the Florida Sports Hall of Fame . . .

                                      Hurst’s Hole in the Wall

                                                     March 22,1994

                                                       Some call it little,
                                                       Some call it small,
                                                        We just call it,
                                                    Hurst’s hole in the Wall.

Who was Hurst? What was the Hole in the Wall?

Hurst was Claude R. Hurst. The Hole in the Wall was his one-man mini-store. Really it was
little more than a hole in the wall on North Marion Street.

Picture in your mind about 12 feet of store front property in the middle of the 400 block of
North Marion Street. That was Hurst’s Hole, less than 100 square feet.

Hurst sold candy and soft drinks — but the main attraction was the popcorn and the peanuts.
Daily, from 2.00 p.m. until midnight, Hurst served no less than the best popcorn and peanuts in Lake
              City — for a nickel a bag.

How good? Well, consider this story from Stan Anders, a former part-time employee.
One night when the then teenaged Anders was on duty, who should come strolling up but
