Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

memory, the long, eloquent poem “Thanat opsis”, an ode on the contemplation of death. “So live that
when thy summons comes ...” Jake Gaither - a giant among men. Rest in peace.

RUBBER CHECK_______On December 2, 1947 our school system wrote a check (school
warrant number eight) to Townie G. Hicks for “part and payment on contract of Little Creek School”

in the amount of $10.70. The check bounced and was returned marked “insufficient funds”.

                                            Open House Magic

                                                      March 1,1994

Nearly 400 people visited the Columbia County School System’s newly renovated
administrative complex during open house last Friday. For about four hours, visitors “oohed” and

“ahhed” their way throughout the beautifully redone facility. Many could hardly believe the restored
beauty of their old high school and junior high school building; especially the modernized

auditorium with its cushioned arm chairs, soft lighting and air conditioning. Time and again former
students stopped in mid-step as they passed by certain rooms to say, “I had study hall here,” or “I had
English class there” or “I remember the day in the principal’s office when...” The comment heard

most, from most everybody was, “We are so glad the superintendent and school board saved our
              building and made it beautiful.”

SCHOOL HISTORY ROOM... One of the more popular stops for open house visitors was
the “museum” or the School History Room. Loaded with photos, yearbooks, and memory albums,

the room buzzed for over three hours with visitors of many different ages pleasantly reminiscing over
their school days memories. Many thanks go to all who visited and also to all those who donated

or loaned items for everyone to enjoy. Special thanks go to Ed Montgomery for scrapbooks gleaned
from his father’s files. To James Montgomery for his photos of his CHS classes from Five Points

School. To Colvin Carter for photos of the long gone brown wooden building and white brick
building that used to be CHS for alumni A. K. Black, Bob Harkness and Jesse Gleason. To Kedra

Mello for a color photo of the Peabody Institute in 1908. To Marie Rozelle Kennon, Jane Lanier
Braunhut, and Brenda Brown for scrapbooks and photos galore. To Dennis Roberts for an aerial
photo of Memorial Stadium and Busy Summers Kirkland for a like- new 1972 CHS yearbook. To
