Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
His tithes in public to be seen of men,
And being seen my recompense? Can I
Who find a wounded traveler by the road
And know I cannot leave him there to die
But grumble loudly while I pile the load
Of helpless flash onto my own beast’s back,
Expect to stud with stars some future crown?
Suppose I do the task assigned but lack
The grace to do it gladly? Will God frown,
Condemning my reluctant rectitude,
And void the things I .do because I should,
Or will He pass my niggling attitude
Because the deeds He sees me do are good?
