Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
I will go back down to the village well
Where living water bubbles. I will tell
To all who listen how the human soul
Apart from God can never be quite whole.
And I will tell them how self-centered life
Will quickly stagnate and so soon be rife
With wriggling creatures underneath the scum
That covers it. And I will bid them come
Back to the well where living waters flow,
For I have tried, and now I surely know
Life lived for self can never be as sweet
As life that follows close the Master’s feet.
Oh there are many cisterns hewed from stone
That catch and hold the rain, but be it known:
The pool that only takes and does not give
Is one where only polliwogs can live.
