I would like to start where it all began, in the beginning. In June, 1971, five staff members em-
barked for an unforgettable week of learning at the University of Florida. The excitement and
hard work for us began several months before the production of the yearbook. Roomier head-
quarters were found, down stairs, in a cluster of three rooms plus a new darkroom. Deadlines
were set, contracts drawn up, and production discussed with Mr. Aden Sowell, our representa-
tive from Paragon Press in Montgomery, Alabama. The mass confusion of Senior picture taking
began in mid-summer and continued into September.
By October 15th, we had begun sending in sections of the yearbook. There was more stag-
gering confusion as we worked desperately to meet deadlines; learning to.work together as we
went along. Proofs were returned from Paragon as early as December, for our final checking.
The closing sections were finished and sent in by February 29th; then we waited. Was there
going to be enough money to cover expenses? Would the books be back before school was
                        out?
In spite of nine photographers, a forever-broken IBM composer, late club pictures, and long
hours at night, we are proud to present this 256 page edition of the Columbian.
I would especially like to thank Mrs. Colvin Carter, advisor and close friend ... Playing with
the composer ... "Go eat lunch, then come back and work" ... Hamburgers from the
"Gables'~ . . Everybody in here who doesn't clean up this place gets an 'F' for the day" ...
"Gretchen come here!!" ... How could we have done it without you?
Mr. Sowell deserves special thanks for being such a great morale builder; helping us analyze
the problems and correct them ourselves.
Thank you, Steve Nesham and Marshall Douglas for the great pictures; and Mr. Ellis for coo-
                        peration with all our plans.
Thank you to the entire Columbian staff, especially Jan, Debbie, Linda, Ann, Gaetan, Sharon,
                        Donna, Bobbie and linda.
How can you bring yourself to end something that has become a part of you?
