Nelson Mandela was given a life sentence in
1962 for plotting to overthrow the South Afri-
can government. He became one of the world's
most influential prisoners. But in February,
1990, at the age of 71, Nelson Mandela he was
released after lengthy negotiations with Presi-
dent F.W. de Klerk.
President George Bush and President Mik-
hail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union met sever-
al times during 1990 - on economic matters,
on nuclear matters and on the matter of a
possible war in the Persian Gulf. (Both leaders
joined together in condemning Iraq's invasion
of Kuwait.). The Cold War between the two
super powers has ended and an era of coopera-
tion has begun.
American troops in Saudia Arabia brought
out feels of patriotism in many Lake City fam-
ilies. Everyone at C.H.S. knew someone who
either went "over there" or someone from an
affected family.
Moscow's shelves were empty and the U.S.
sent aid to help and a former enemy. The
common alliance against Hussan helped break
down the cold war mentality between the two
super-powers.
Prague . . . was the scene of many pro de-
mocracy rallies. All over Europe a new feeling
of freedom was in the air.
