The History of Columbia County was originally written by Dr. Edward Keuchel in
1980. In 1995, after the book had been out of print and unavailable for many years, The
Alligator Festival Committee decided to attempt to have this work of history repro­
duced.

This was in conjunction with the stated goals of the Alligator Festival which are to
honor the heritage, culture, and history of all the people of Columbia County. Any er­
rors, omissions, or other historical inequities are as they were originally written by the
author.

Due to the copyright statutes, no changes were made to this publication and no attempt
was made to edit or revise the work in any form. We hope that all the people who
purchase and read this book will understand the conditions under which it was repro­
duced and that we, the Alligator Festival, have made an effort to recreate and provide
this book for all of the people of Columbia County. We thank you for your support.
The publication of this book is made possible through the dedication and generosity of
a number of individuals and businesses who share a common pride in Columbia County
and a determination to promote and perpetuate its history.
The Halpatter Tustenuggee Association of Lake City, Inc., was organized in 1996 to
promote Lake City’s early history to the public through education and living history
projects; to host an annual “Alligator Fest” as a promotional vehicle for Lake City and
its downtown area and to assure continuity to these projects. This organization is proud
