History of Military Units in Columbia County, FL (1970) Robert Gary Shields



                             According to state records, in the spring of 1845 the Columbia

                       county grand jury presented a plea for "the removal of the Seminole
                       Indians, who may prove dangerous in event of war with a foreign

                       power by serving as guides against settlers."


                             On Dec. 17, 1845, William Reed ( Redd ) deposed, before George

                       L. Phillipsy Justice of the Peace, St. Johns County, that he had"
                       "lived at White Sulphur. Springs on line between Hamilton and Columbia

                       Counties, since 1830." He commanded a company of volunteers during
                       the Seminole Indian War.



                             Edward R. Ives served as a soldier in the Indian wars of
                       1835 and 1855.
