History of Military Units in Columbia County, FL (1970) Robert Gary Shields
THE CIVIL WAR
1861 - 1865
With the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South,
in 1861, Lake City was without organized military units. The call for
volunteers was given and Lake City, and" Columbia County responded by
organizing six companies., and joined-with Suwannee and LaFayettee
Counties for two more for'the Confederate Armies. In addition, other
small groups from the area joined as the war progressed. Columbia
County also provided some outstanding Field-officers, such as Lt. Col.
A. J. T. Wright, Lt. Col. M. Whit Smith and R. B. Thomas, Adjutant 2nd.
Florida Infantry.
Columbia County sent the following units into the Confederate
Armies:
Columbia Trapiers - Capt. J. R. Francis
Company C, 2nd Florida Regiment - Columbia Rifles
Capt. Walter R. Moore
Company I, 3rd Florida Infantry - Dixie Stars -
Capt. Jesse B. Wood
Company K, 3rd Florida Infantry - Columbia and Suwannee Guards -
Capt. William Parker
Company D, 4th Florida Infantry
Capt. William A. Shefielde
Company E, 4th Florida Infantry (Columbia & Lafayette)
Capt. Thomas A. McGhee
Company F, 5th Florida Infantry
Company A, 1st Florida Calvary
Capt. Arthur Roberts
Company G, 2nd Florida Calvary
Lake City was prominent during the War as supply center, being the
supply depot for north and east Florida. Lake City was also a medical
center.
