History of Military Units in Columbia County, FL (1970) Robert Gary Shields
Old Clay Landing, June 7th, 1856
Dear Doc
I have arrived here with my command except a few left at Martins
Island for a guard. Yesterday was one of those days. Rained on us all
the time. £:Swihn6yuisnmbrid'ing his knee is shot all to pieces, thou the
bone is not broken, iho it is an awful sight. Dr. I am tired of the service,
this rain and every other thing. Can't you send me down some recruits as my
command is so small that it cramps me & makes it so hard on the boys about
guard duty. Spread your self to get men as I am 35 miles nearer than I
was. It is a beautiful place on the river bluff up to the woods. No news
more than old Daniel's company and Alex Bell's company went on a 3 day scout
in the Gulf Hammock & saw plenty of fresh sign. Bell made a very strong
report to Whit about his opinion of Indians. He is as strong in his report
as I am. Daniel, Wright & Bell is now all in a row G. Whit
leaves the Keys today for New Port & Tallahassee to make reports. Whit saw
fresh track made the night before behind a tree in about 125 yds. of Young-
bloods' company. I have now ten of Youngblood's men & 12 of W. B. Hardee's
foot company & 15 of my.company here, making 37 men. I expect this Steam
Boat to be up from the Key's today with Ives and Dr. Masters. Stoves & some
more of men.Tell Harriet howdy & all the children, and all of my friends.
■ I would write Harriet but I have no chance to write but this letter.
Get & send me some recruits if you have to make them. Old Crooms is here
bothering me to death to buy him a horse.
Yours Respectfully
, A. J. T. Wright
