ARMORIES
The Sandlin Building was used as an armory until 1936, when the unit
moved to its new site on North Alachua Street. The building was owned
by the City of Lake City and used as its City Hall, with the top floor
rented as an armory. The building was constructed as a WPA project with
a total cost of $26,820.00, of which the Federal Government contributed
$22,970.00.
In 1954 an effort was begun to secure a new armory in Lake City.
These efforts were spearheaded by Col. Robert B. Harkness. On April 18, 1957
the land for the new armory was deeded to the Armory Board, State of Florida
by the City of Lake City. The land is located on State Road N. 250 and
contains 6.839 acres. On March 21, 1958, final Federal approval and
release of funds of $97,000.00 was made . On May 18, 1959,the new armory
with a total cost of $175,462.42, was dedicated and designated as
the "Robert B. Harkness National Guard Armory"
