Desolation and Death
Storm did frightful work in and near Ft. White
Fort White, Fla.—October 1—At 6:30 o’clock a.m.,
Tuesday, this place was struck by a terrific tornado, which
lasted about two hours, the winds blowing from the east,
until about 7:30, after which it changed to the west and
the change was what caused the worst damage to
property.
There were no lives lost immediately in the town, but
several people were injured by falling timbers and debris
of all kinds. There were two persons killed just outside of
the town, and a great many wounded. There is no
communications to be had from anywhere today, the
wires all being down.
After the winds ceased there were not half of the houses
left standing in the entire town, and those left standing
were careened and in such condition that they are no good
at all; and a great majority of them will have to be tom
down, as it is absolutely dangerous to go into them. Out
of about twenty-two business houses in the town, there
are but about seven standing, and they are badly damaged.
