Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams

preparing to move away, while there are a great many

others that would move had they the means with which to

              leave on.

Every phosphate plant in the vicinity of this place is a

total wreck and it is not thought that many of them will
ever again resume operation. The turpentine people are

completely ruined, there not being hardly a tree left

standing in the woods anywhere. The stills are all blown

down and tom up; their houses all wrecked and many

              mules killed.

Candidly speaking, this entire community is mined, and

hundreds of people out of employment. It is expected that

the suffering will be great, and assistance has already

been asked for by many, and tomorrow the mayor will

make an appeal to the governor of Florida for assistance.

The merchants had not made any collections at all from

the farmers, and it is estimated that they have between

$50,000 and $75,000 on their books. Everywhere one

looks there is nothing but desolation and destruction.
