preparing to move away, while there are a great many
others that would move had they the means with which to
leave on.
Every phosphate plant in the vicinity of this place is a
total wreck and it is not thought that many of them will
ever again resume operation. The turpentine people are
completely ruined, there not being hardly a tree left
standing in the woods anywhere. The stills are all blown
down and tom up; their houses all wrecked and many
mules killed.
Candidly speaking, this entire community is mined, and
hundreds of people out of employment. It is expected that
the suffering will be great, and assistance has already
been asked for by many, and tomorrow the mayor will
make an appeal to the governor of Florida for assistance.
The merchants had not made any collections at all from
the farmers, and it is estimated that they have between
$50,000 and $75,000 on their books. Everywhere one
looks there is nothing but desolation and destruction.
