Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
Price Creek Cemetery
*Summarized by Aleene Havird and others*
“Known at one time as the “Roberts Cemetery” and the “Markham
Cemetery,” Price Creek is believed to be the oldest existing cemetery in
Columbia County, dating to the early 1830’s, probably 1831.
The cemetery is located near the original settlement of Alligator, as well
as the sites of two of the largest Indian villages in the area.
The pioneer settlers of this community arrived in Columbia County
during the early 1800’s and include members of the Roberts, Markham,
Weeks, O’Steen, Parrish, Edwards, Jones, Payne, Sparkman, Cason
families and others.
Veterans of the Revolutionary War, Seminole War, the War of 1812, the
War Between the States, and more recent wars are found in the
cemetery.
Ten veterans of the Confederacy are buried at Price Creek, as is one
veteran, Theophilus Weeks, of the American Revolution.
Many decedents of those families buried at Price Creek Cemetery are
buried in the churchyard at Old Bethel United Methodist Church.
One of the earliest and most historic communities in our area, “Old
Alligator” Settlement and Price Creek Cemetery are the very foundation
and comer stone of what would become Lake City and Columbia
County.”
(A special thank you to Aleene Havird for sharing her wealth of
knowledge concerning early Columbia County and its pioneer families.)
