car, and go with Daddy to the fire. Mother would keep us children
safely back and out of harm’s way while Daddy and the other firemen
fought the fire.
“Back in the early 1900’s, it was customary for fireman to do minstrel
shows. My daddy told the story one time that the station fire alarm
went off while all the firemen were on stage at a local movie house.
The entire cast— all were firemen— dashed off the stage to go put out
the fire. Daddy said the lady of the house was shocked when
several men in blackface showed up with hoses and axes at her
home!
My grandfather, George O. Adicks, had started the fire department in
Lake City. He raised his large family in the fire station and in the
Adicks bakery. My Grand father and my father were not just firemen
but also two of the best bakers in Lake City.
My father grew up in his father’s fire department and became a full
time fireman at age 13. As a little girl, it was a thrill to know my
Daddy was the bravest fireman in the whole world.
