Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
SKIPPING AROUND
*The Gainesville Sun edition of Sunday, November 4, has a story in the sports
section about area high school football announcers. CHS Tiger announcer Rev.
Isadore Williams is pictured and extensively interviewed. FWHS Indian
announcer Shayne Morgan is also interviewed.
*FIDO is an acronym that means “Forget it, drive on.” That is what Ann George,
local AARP safe driving teacher, says that AARP recommends as the best way
to deal with road rage.
‘ Congratulations to friend Perley Richardson who was recently named the local
“Rotarian of the Year.” Perley raises the level of every organization he is
involved with just because of the fine man he is.
‘ Clary Odom is a 5’11", 215-pound defensive lineman for the CHS Tigers. Clary
is a fine young man and a good student. His nickname is “Quick” and once when
he shaved his head his friends called him “Slick”. Of course you can call him by
his full name if you like: Clary Sha’bazz Cegenjovonmar Odom, Jr. Whatever
you call him, just be sure to call him at meal time!
‘ Last week’s column on Mrs. Ethel Browning stirred lots of discussion on favorite
teachers. Interestingly, the 10 or so people I talked to all listed elementary
school teachers as their favorites— and yet, interestingly, it is rare that an
elementary school teacher is invited to a class reunion.
*l was glad to see Harland Clements (CHS 1949) at the Bethlehem Baptist
homecoming two weeks ago. Harland was an outstanding student and athlete at
CHS and he has been a successful businessman but he has been battling
cancer a long time. He reports that he has completed all his treatments and now
hopes for the best. Harland was named his class’s “Friendliest Boy” and he is still
one of the most congenial people you will ever meet.
‘ If anyone can remember the advertisement painted on the side of the old Little
Store on West Duval Street, please give me a call. Seems like it was some soft
drink.
‘Acquaintance Stan Fricano told me that marriage is a relationship where one
partner is always right and the other partner is a husband.
NOT AFFECTED
After the terrible New Orleans floods, a TV reporter asked a local woman how the
devastation of the churches in the area had affected their lives. The woman said,
“Not much. We haven’t gone to Church’s in years. We get all our fried chicken
from Popeye’s!”
