Local officials
The county superintendents of public instruction for Columbia
County that decade were J.W. Burns (1909 - 1917) and James R.
Lites (1917 - 1921).
The police chiefs/ marshals that decade, as far as can be
determined, were J.C. Roberts (1908 - 1910), H.S. Cason (1910
- 1911), J.C. Roberts (1911 - 1915), W.B. Douglass (1915 -
1916), W.J. Shackleford (1916 - 1919), and W.B. Douglass (1919
- 1920).
The mayors of Lake City that decade were J.B. Hodges
(mayor 1909 - 1910), George S. Wilson (mayor 1910 - 1912),
A.J.P. Julian (mayor 1912 - 1914), G.G. Gillen (mayor 1914 -
1916), A.J. Moseley (mayor 1916 - 1918), J.T. Jones (mayor
1918 - 1919), and R.W. Farnell (mayor 1919 - 1920).
Wilson
Park on the
north side of
Lake Desoto is
dedicated to
Mayor George
Wilson; the
plaque there
(pictured to the
right) reads:
“Wilson Park,
dedicated to Geo. ‘Uncle’ Sam Wilson 1870-1951, City Mayor 1910-
1912. City Commissioner 16 yrs. City Ordinance No A106, May 3,
1937. Approved October 2, 1989. Erected by his son and nephew,
Keith Wilson - Hugh Wilson.” The roof of the gazebo in Wilson Park
is from the old gazebo in Olustee Park. The rest of the Wilson Park
gazebo is new.
