Buffalo Bill in Lake City
“Buffalo Bill and His Wild West Show” performed in Lake
City on October 17, 1912, putting on a memorable show at CHS’s
first football field, which is now the east parking lot of the V.A. Hos-
pital.
Watertown Mill
In 1915, the Watertown Mill, owned by A.G. Paul, opened
and slowly added more and more workers till it reached over 100
employees in World War I. The lumberyard there, called the Florida
East Coast Lumber Company, was at one time the largest one in
Florida. The company town associated with the mill had its own school,
facilities, and commissary. It continued to thrive until a large fire in
1922, combined with the devastating effects of the Great Depression,
greatly curtailed operations at the mill.
