Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy

                                            Chapter Thirteen: 1930 - 1939

The Great Depression of the late 1920s and 1930s put a
temporary stop to the economic growth of Lake City and much of
America, but federal programs, for example the Civilian Conserva-
tion Corps, put local people to work and enabled them to have an
income. Local banks were sorely tested during the Depression and
one bank, the Watertown Bank, closed for good, but most local
banks were able to weather the economic crisis despite the falling
prices for farm products in a county that heavily depended on agricul-
ture. One local politician, Fred Cone, became governor in 1937 and
brought to office a conservative bent that stressed frugality and thrifti-
                              ness.
