Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy

                                                                       Chapter Thirteen: 1930 - 1939

The Telegraphic Track Meet of 1930

With today’s gas prices so high, high school teams may have
to scramble to find money to pay for their road trips. The CHS track
team and fellow conference members faced the opposite problem -
cheap gas but no money - in 1930 due to the Great Depression and
solved it with the “telegraphic track meet.” Each conference team
stayed home and held its own track meet with no opponent present.
The teams just competed against the clock and the tape measure.
Each coach monitored his own team’s results, using the honor system,
then telegraphed the results to conference headquarters, which deter-
mined the winners. Thus, such meets were called “telegraphic track
                                 meets.”
