Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
The State Farmers Market was able to display many agricultural
products for sale by local farmers. Originally a farmers’ market,
this building became a tobacco warehouse when many local
farmers went into the growing of tobacco in the 1920s, enabling
such growers to sell their product locally rather than shipping it
to Live Oak and other out-of-town markets. This building was
later used by the Metal Products Company and is now used by
the school district’s transportation, maintenance,
and warehouse departments.
The Table Supply grocery store
When the Table Supply grocery store opened in Lake City in
1939, it offered as an inducement to customers who visited the store
on opening day a “free four-string, all-corn broom to all customers
who made a purchase of 50 cents or more.” To put the value of the
free broom in perspective, the most expensive item sold in the store
was a 20-pound sack of flour for 51 cents, a lot of money in those
Depression Era days.
