                                                                       Chapter Fourteen: 1940 - 1949


                                              Entertainment in Lake City in the 1940s

                                         “Mr. Blabbermouth” and “For the Common Defense” were
                                 two of the many patriotic movies shown often during World War II to
                                 promote the sale of War Bonds to finance the war. Movies like these
                                 were regularly shown at Lake City’s three downtown theaters:  the
                                 Desoto, Grand, and Lake. The films always ended with the same

                                 message: “America Needs Your Money! Buy War Bonds!”





















                                  Local movie theaters showed a variety of movies in World War II.

                                         Segregation continued in the South, including Florida, until
                                 the 1950s and 1960s.
