Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Fourteen: 1940 - 1949
Entertainment in Lake City in the 1940s
“Mr. Blabbermouth” and “For the Common Defense” were
two of the many patriotic movies shown often during World War II to
promote the sale of War Bonds to finance the war. Movies like these
were regularly shown at Lake City’s three downtown theaters: the
Desoto, Grand, and Lake. The films always ended with the same
message: “America Needs Your Money! Buy War Bonds!”
Local movie theaters showed a variety of movies in World War II.
Segregation continued in the South, including Florida, until
the 1950s and 1960s.
